NSHSS Member Event at Texas A&M University

On Saturday, February 24, NSHSS welcomed members and their families to College Station, Texas, for a Member Event at Texas A&M University!

This one-day event included a networking breakfast, helpful information sessions from Texas A&M students and staff members, a College & Career Fair, and educational sessions. The event ended with the NSHSS Member Recognition Ceremony, where each member in attendance was honored for their academic achievements!

Event Agenda

Attendees checked in with a digital or printed copy of their tickets, and received name badges.

Attendees gathered information from College & Career Fair exhibitors. NSHSS provided a catered breakfast for all event participants to enjoy while they spoke to exhibitors and other members!

NSHSS welcomed attendees to campus, and then Texas A&M Undergraduate Admissions's senior associate Director of Recruitment guided them through an informative presentation about the university.

We heard NSHSS Collegiate Council Executive Board Member Helena Coloma discuss her tips and tricks for transitioning from high school to college, getting out of your comfort zone and making new friends away from home, staying on top of the college workload, and more!

The Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley discussed the skills you can build from being active in community service, how you can get involved with your local chapter, and how community service can be a benefit when building your resume!

A panel of Texas Universities discussed their academics, campus life, admissions process, and what makes their school stand out, with live Q&A!

Attendees had the chance to gather information from College & Career Fair exhibitors, further explore the Texas A&M University campus, and visit nearby eateries for lunch on their own.

We heard from a panel of NSHSS Scholarship winners about how to find and apply for scholarships and stand out in your applications!

Texas A&M Army ROTC hosted an educational workshop discussing scholarship opportunities and how being in the Army develops you as a leader and sets you up for success in both the private and public sector.

The Career Center's mission is to promote career learning and development, empowering all Aggies to realize their potential and establishing Texas A&M University as a preferred source of talent. They offer career development throughout your time in Aggieland and beyond through our dedicated career advisors for each college, degree, and major. Get expert guidance on your future; their team is ready to answer any career-related questions you may have!

NSHSS Members heard from Texas A&M University students about navigating campus life, choosing an appropriate major, and other general information about Texas A&M University.

We heard from current NSHSS members Aaron (Be More Fund 2023 Winner) and Allison (Ambassador & Miss Teen West Virginia) about how they are filling their college applications with extracurricular activities while managing their time wisely to stay on top of their academics!

Members learned more about the Learning communities, Academic excellence, Undergraduate research, National fellowships, Capstones, and
Honors (LAUNCH) programs that are offered at Texas A&M!

NSHSS Scholarship Winners were recognized, and members heard congratulatory remarks and then received their own NSHSS honor medallion!

Event Details

This event took place in the Rudder Theater Complex on the Texas A&M campus.

Event attendees parked in the University Center Garage (UCG), The Stalling Garage (SBG) that is attached to the TAMU Hotel, or the West Campus Garage (WCG) (right across the street from the Rec Sports Center). Parking fees will range from $5-$15 MAX for the day.

Attendees are responsible for getting to and from the event location. NSHSS does not assist with airfare or hotels. We recommend that you register as soon as possible. Seating is limited, and registration will close once we reach the venue's maximum capacity. Only those who register via Eventbrite will be admitted to the event. Registration fees are non-refundable.

Members came a day early and took a campus tour hosted by Texas A&M! Self-guided tours were available the day of the event but if you would like a guided tour be sure to register ahead of time!

Are you interested in volunteering at this event? NSHSS is dedicated to world betterment and encourages our members to give back to their community. As a volunteer, you will still have the opportunity to attend the sessions that you are interested in throughout the day. Help out behind the scenes and earn volunteer service hours!

Meet the Speakers

Kati Clark

Texas A&M Undergraduate Admissions

Kati Clark is a Senior Associate Director of Recruitment for Undergraduate Admissions at Texas A&M University. She has been working in higher education her entire professional career, encompassing 15 years of service. As a student worker and tour guide in the Office of Admissions at Angelo State University, she began to fall in love with sharing the college experience with prospective students and their families. After completing a BBA in Marketing and an MEd in Student Development and Leadership in Higher Education at Angelo State, Kati was given the opportunity to begin work at Texas A&M University. She has been with Texas A&M for ten years, working in the Office of Admissions and Undergraduate Recruitment. She sees herself working in higher education for the rest of her professional career because of the incredible fulfillment she experiences when helping students achieve their goals of entering college and completing a degree.

Helena Coloma

NSHSS Collegiate Council Executive Board

Helena Coloma is the Co-Vice President of Member Engagement on the NSHSS Collegiate Council Executive Board. Helena Coloma is a Pre-Med/Pre-Dental undergraduate student majoring in Biology at Harvard University. She currently serves as the Collegiate Council Executive Board Co-Vice President of Member Engagement. She is a former Be More Fund Mentor and a two-time NSHSS scholarship winner, including the 2018 STEM Innovation in Artificial Intelligence $1000 Scholarship and 2021 Collegiate Council Leadership $1500 Scholarship. Helena began her undergraduate studies in Molecular & Cellular Biology at UC Berkeley and has much experience in lab work and research. She is also currently an Associate Director of MedNews Week, which is affiliated with the NSHSS Be More Fund. As a part of MNW, she has hosted and moderated several Keynote Conferences and Medical Spotlight shows featuring global leaders in medicine as well as publishing many abstracts and articles highlighting MNW's impact on a global audience. Moreover, Helena has 4+ years of experience working in the dental field, a past internship with NASA, and is a former Miss Teen California and Miss Michigan.

Dr. Gisele Cardoso de Lemos

Texas A&M University LAUNCH Honors Program

Dr. Gisele Cardoso de Lemos is a National Fellowship Program Coordinator at LAUNCH. She obtained a Ph.D. degree in English (2021) from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies (2015) from the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Brazil. Dr. Lemos was a research fellow at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina, in 2006, and at Jawarhalal Nehru University, India, in 2013.

Colonel Scott M. Dellinger

U.S Army Texas A&M ROTC

Colonel Dellinger is the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Department Head and Professor of Military Science at Texas A&M’s main campus here in College Station. He is a distinguished alumnus of Texas A&M and was commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery second lieutenant in 1997. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M and then went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from Tarleton State University, a Master of Arts in Leadership Studies from The University of Texas at El Paso, and another Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He has completed past assignments in Baghdad, Iraq, Fort Bliss, Texas, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. In addition, he has also commanded various battalions of troops in Okinawa, Japan, Ramstein Airbase, Germany, and Arsenal, Alabama. He has been decorated with numerous military awards, including: the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He also earned the Parachutist Badge, Army Space Badge, and Combat Action Badge. He is married and has three children.

Laura Torres

Texas A&M University Career Center

Laura Torres serves as the Career Services Coordinator for 1st and 2nd year students at Mays Business School by helping them discover resources and goals while focusing on career, leadership, and personal development. She obtained her B.A. in Communication from Texas A&M University in 2022, and her M.S. in Sports Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 2023. During her time at Texas A&M, she was very involved with her student organizations including Alpha Phi Omega, Mexican Student Association, and Alpha Delta Pi. Laura joined the Career Center in 2023; prior to joining the Career Center, she had past experiences that included working for Texas A&M Athletics and The Preiss Company. She also serves as an advisor for Aggie Keys, a women's organization on-campus.

Kellie Malone

Texas A&M University Career Center

Kellie Malone joined the Texas A&M Career Center in 2024 as Assistant Director of Career Services, serving as a career advisor for general studies and exploratory students. In this role, Kellie will also serve as the advisor for Aggie Career Team, a student organization of career peer educators sponsored by the Career Center. Although new to the Career Center, she is no stranger to Texas A&M. Kellie has spent 16 years as a member of The Association of Former Students staff, where she served as a member of the Campus Programs Team, working to educate the student body about the impact of the Aggie Network, serving as a liaison between current students and former students, and serving the campus community through The Association. Kellie's prior experiences include coordinating student and alumni events, including Aggie Ring Day, programming to engage current students, and executing faculty, staff, and student award programs. Kellie received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Baylor University in 1999 and her Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M University in 2008.

Aaron George

NSHSS Ambassador & Scholarship Winner

Aaron George is a high school junior in Austin, TX, who is passionate about science, technology, and innovation. His impressive achievements include receiving prestigious awards such as the Lemelson Early Inventor Award and the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair Grand Award. Aaron is a skilled student pilot and Cadet Master Sergeant in Civil Air Patrol. He is the President and Founder of STEMVest, a nonprofit providing STEM resources to K-12 students globally. His dedication to scientific research is evident from his involvement in science fairs since fourth grade, earning numerous awards. Aaron excels academically, participating in honor societies and pursuing dual enrollment at The University of Texas. His internships include General Surgeon's Intern and Software Developer Intern roles. In 2023, he participated in the Yale Young Global Scholars and Harvard Summer School Scholar programs. Aaron's commitment extends to community service, raising $23,000 at a fundraising gala. He is a certified student pilot and aspires to become a flight surgeon. Selected as a Texas High School Aerospace Scholar by NASA, Aaron's diverse experiences, leadership potential, and community engagement position him as a promising candidate for a STEM leader and a motivational speaker.

Allison Dodson

NSHSS Ambassador

A native of Charles Town, Allison Dodson is honored to represent the Mountain State as Miss West Virginia's Teen while advocating for making our world a better place. “I know how important my education and the environment are to me, and I cannot wait to further educate on the importance of sustainability,” Allison says. “My initiative allows people of all ages to become aware of a variety of different tasks they can perform in order to make our environment a cleaner place.” Allison is a senior at Washington High School, where she is an ambassador and social influencer of the National Society of High School Scholars, secretary of the National Honor Society, a Delegate for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, a member of the National Athletic Scholars program, member of the Scientific Laureate writing program, and member of the National Society of Torch and Laurel. She is also an ambassador for 40cean and The Happiness Project and uses both partnerships to promote mental health and the importance of a clean Earth. She has received multiple awards for her commitment to service and continues an active role with various city councils. She plans to partner with FEMA and the Department of Environmental Protection to expand her initiative further and build public education on the environment. An honor student-athlete, she plays and is captain of the volleyball team, all while continuing to strive for educational excellence. Currently dual-enrolled at Shepherd University, she will graduate from Washington High School in the spring of 2024 with 38 college credits. Allison plans to major in Biochemistry with a minor in Cellular and Molecular Biology and pursue a doctorate in Pharmacology to study genetics and conduct research in cell development and alteration. Allison founded her nonprofit in 2020, Project H.O.P.E (Help Our Planet Earth), and has fully committed to living a sustainable lifestyle while teaching others to do the same. “If I can make even the slightest impact on others, show them ways they can be involved, and be a positive role model for all; I know I have made the change I would like to see in the world.”
