Date: Thursday, February 6, 2014

ATLANTA, G.A., February 3, 2014 – The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), an international honor society organization dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of high school students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment, announced today a strategic alliance with the global education organization, AFS-USA.

Together, NSHSS and AFS-USA have an opportunity to bring resources to diverse students and educators by encouraging cross-cultural understanding that supports student achievement in an increasingly competitive globalized society.

As part of NSHSS’ mission to recognize academic excellence and to encourage members to apply their unique talents, vision and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world, this partnership will enable NSHSS to recognize the achievements of students that study abroad with AFS-USA. These include US students who participate in AFS programs abroad, as well as international students who are hosted in the US by AFS-USA.

NSHSS was established to highlight the accomplishments of high school and college students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment, as well as to foster their continued success. NSHSS members currently number 950,000 from 160 countries and range from high school students to college students to young professionals who are demonstrating a desire to make a positive impact on their peers and their larger community. More than 100,000 high-achieving high school students are inaugurated into the Society annually.

For over 65 years, AFS-USA has fostered global citizenship by providing intercultural learning experiences for students, families, schools and communities through a global volunteer partnership. Each year, AFS-USA welcomes 2,300 international high school students from 90 countries to the US to live with host families and attend local schools. AFS-USA sends 1,100 students from the US abroad each year on academic year, semester, summer, and customized group programs. The organization also administers US Department of State Programs (DoS) designed to strengthen diplomatic ties between targeted countries and the US.
