    Attendees experienced the projects, prototypes, and nonprofits selected to compete live in front of a panel of judges in the shark-tank-style NSHSS Be More Fund Competition for the chance to win one of ten  $10,000 grants!

    Students, concluded the night and let loose with fellow members at a party just for them! Music and games came together to create an opportunity to make new friends from all over the country!

Members gained insights and advice from past scholarship winners as they discussed tips for finding the best scholarships and how to showcase academic and community accomplishments to stand out from the crowd in scholarship applications! This panel contained valuable information tailored to member needs and interests as the panelists answered live questions from the audience!

Meet the Future-Focused Panelists!

Sandy Mathis

Microsoft

With almost 25 years of customer experience, and consumer and customer insights experience, Sandy is a Certified Customer Experience Professional (CCXP), Project Management Professional (PMP), and is a Customer Experience Strategist within Microsoft’s Customer Experience & Strategy organization.  In her role, she is focused on strategy, development of new ways to solve customer challenges, measurement activities, and identification of actions which improve/transform the experience for our end customers through digital & AI approaches.  Furthermore, Sandy is a writer and freelances in the CX and tech-related space for TechTarget.
 
Sandy holds CX, UX, and Design Thinking certifications from Forrester, General Assembly, and the University of Cincinnati; along with being RIVA trained qualitative researcher (Fundamentals of Moderating, RIVA 241: Qualitative Analysis and Reporting, RIVA 242: Qualitative Toolbox), as well as in Workshop Facilitator).
 
Historically, Sandy has helped organizations and clients across a variety of industries to develop customer & employee experience strategies, measurement programming, actioning of insights, and facilitate workshops focused on: journey mapping and employee engagement, to enable organizations to move the needle with customer/ consumer/ employee experience adoption, as well as human experience and digital/user experience for higher loyalty and satisfaction.
 
In addition, Sandy provides subject matter expertise to Customer Experience projects, including selling services to new and existing clients alike.
 
Sandy provides subject matter expertise to Customer Experience projects, including selling CX, UX and Design services to new and existing clients alike.  Additionally, she has provided customer experience, strategic insight and project management for some of the top global consumer and business brands on both the client and supplier side for HCL Technologies (consultant), Equifax, Kantar TNS (consultant), and Georgia-Pacific, as well as other CPG and financial services organizations. 
 
In her free-time, Sandy can be found locally trying power walking a local trail, trying a new restaurant or recipes, spending time with her Fur-child, Bella, or traveling with her scuba gear or skis in tow.

Brooks Dishman

Delta Air Lines

I began my engineering career with Delta Air Lines in January 2017 as a Co-Op Engineer in Liaison Engineering supporting 24/7 airline operations. I graduated from Georgia Tech in December 2018 with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and returned to work in Liaison Engineering until 2020. I transitioned to a role within our engine maintenance facility as a Repair Process Engineer for engine piece parts. In 2021, I moved to Delta’s Fleet Engineering team where I have continued to work as a Structural Project Engineer. Across all of my positions within Delta, I am most proud of my involvement with our co-op program as a participant, mentor, and hiring representative. I also returned to school in 2023, graduating this past Summer with a master’s in engineering management with a focus on quality management from Kennesaw State University.

Murali Murugan

Macy's, Inc. 

Murali Murugan is a recognized leader in mobile engineering and product strategy, with over 14 years of experience. Currently, he leads the mobile team at Macy’s Inc. as the Director, Software Engineering - Mobile. In this role, he is responsible for mobile application development to support both Macy's and Bloomingdale’s and serves as a champion of a mobile-first approach to enhance customer experiences.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Murali is a Fellow member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of IEEE, and a member of the Forbes Technology Council. These roles enable him to contribute to the broader tech community, fostering a collaborative environment for innovation and mentorship. Through his advisory position in the Digital Marketing Program at the University of San Francisco, he guides emerging leaders in tech, sharing insights and helping shape the curriculum to align with industry trends.

Murali’s dedication to excellence, thought leadership, and mentorship underscores his commitment to building the next generation of tech professionals, ensuring they are equipped to shape the future of the technology landscape.

Beth Perkins

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital / ALSAC

Beth has been with ALSAC/St. Jude since 2008, serving as the Regional Director of the Memphis office, Director of Event Sponsorships and Cause Marketing.  Currently, Beth serves as Principal Advisor – Partnership Development and Stewardship for ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness arm of St. Jude Children’s Research Children’s Hospital. In her current role, Beth sets strategy and serves as the relationship manager for national groups and organizations who partner with St. Jude. Her greatest joy comes from building relationships with the amazing donors and sharing the powerful St. Jude story and mission.  

LTC Mathew Green

U.S. Army ROTC

LTC Matthew Green currently serves as the Chief of Marketing and Recruiting for US Army Cadet Command.  He was commissioned into the Army as an Aviation Officer in 2006 after graduating from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  As an AH-64 Apache Helicopter aviator, LTC Green served as a platoon leader, company commander, future operations planner, battalion executive officer, and brigade operations officer.  During his final aviation tour, he was afforded the opportunity to serve as an instructor pilot in the AH-64D/E.​

LTC Green started his Army career in Illesheim, Germany, as a platoon leader in 2-159th Attack/Reconnaissance Battalion (ARB).  While assigned to this unit he enjoyed traveling with his family throughout Europe and experienced his first combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  His second assignment took him to the prestigious 1-101st ARB in Fort Campbell, KY, from which he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  After subsequently graduating with honors form Vanderbilt’s Master’s of Business Administration program, LTC Green attended the Command and General Staff College.  From there he returned to the aviation schoolhouse to serve as a Battalion Executive Officer, Brigade Operations Officer, and instructor pilot.​

In 2020, LTC Green made the decision to change career fields and start a career in the newly formed Army Enterprise Marketing and Behavioral Economics branch.  During his time pursuing his MBA at Vanderbilt, he developed an interest in consumer behavior and development of human capital and felt this change in career was an opportunity to pursue a new area of interest while continuing to serve. Selected in the first cohort of officers, LTC Green spent his first assignment conducting market analysis/research while teaching Principles of Economics and Behavioral Economics at USMA.​

LTC Green lives with Audra, his wife of 18 years, and their three children, Alea, Levi, and Elijah, in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Be More Competition

NSHSS celebrates and honors lifetime members from across the globe who believe in being the next agents of change and the next thought leaders. The $100,000 NSHSS Be More Grant is a program set up to provide funding to NSHSS members aspiring for world betterment and will award $10,000 grants to the ten winners.

As part of the grant requirements, the top 15 finalists were selected to participate in a LIVE judged competition at Scholar's Day Atlanta for all event attendees to watch. Finalists presented their projects live during the event in front of a panel of judges to compete for their chance of earning one of the $10,000 grants. All competitors left the event even more inspired to continue their efforts to make the world a better place!

Chris DiCosmo

U.S. News & World Report

Chris DiCosmo is co-president of U.S. News & World Report. He oversees several business units, including Education, Money, News, and Real Estate. DiCosmo is responsible for developing strategic partnerships throughout the organization and for launching new business models and products that support the continuously evolving U.S. News & World Report business.

Before his senior role at U.S. News, DiCosmo played a key role in launching several digital start-ups and led the online advertising operations department at USA TODAY.

DiCosmo holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Widener University and an MBA from American University. 

Mitzi Williams

Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Georgia Institute of Technology

As a seasoned professional with over 25 years of HR experience, Mitzi Williams currently serves as the Director of Human Resources at Georgia Institute of Technology/Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts where she is responsible for all HR functions for the college’s staff, faculty, and students.  Previously, she held the position of Executive Director of Human Resources at California State University, Channel Islands and Chief Human Resources Officer for Atlanta Metropolitan State College.

She holds both an MBA and master’s in human resources management from Keller Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Science from McNeese State University.   In addition, she is an active member of the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM), the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA), and the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR).  

Shannon McCaffrey

COX Communications: Atlanta Journal Constitution

Shannon McCaffrey is senior editor for enterprise reporting at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where she oversees a broad portfolio, including the criminal cases against Donald Trump.
She has spent nearly three decades in journalism and has deep experience reporting and editing government and political stories at both the state and national levels.
McCaffrey worked for The Associated Press in Albany, N.Y., and Washington, D.C. She also covered the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Department of Justice for Knight Ridder Newspapers (which was purchased by McClatchy Newspapers).
In Atlanta, she was The AP’s statehouse correspondent, leading coverage of legislative news as well as statewide and presidential campaigns.
McCaffrey moved to the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 2012 as a senior editor overseeing crime, courts and breaking news coverage.
After leaving for two years to work as senior director of health sciences communications at Emory University, she returned to The AJC in 2022.
McCaffrey holds a B.A. from Colgate University and an MFA in narrative nonfiction from the University of Georgia.

Elena Fernandez

Elena's professional journey is dedicated to advancing intercultural understanding and leadership through meaningful roles at the University of Georgia (UGA), Emory University, both Morehouse College and Spelman College, and The Carter Center. She has created programs that empower global thinkers and build connections across diverse communities. From managing international education initiatives to amplifying citizen voices through key projects at The Carter Center, her work reflects a deep commitment to excellence and global engagement. Having traveled extensively throughout the world, she brings a unique perspective to every project she undertakes, blending professional insight with global curiosity. Trained in yoga and an advocate for mindfulness, she leads with intention and is committed to fostering environments where both individuals and ideas can thrive, ensuring that every initiative is grounded in both purpose and presence.

Veronica Medellin - Bair

Veronica is a Relationship Manager on the Atlanta Metro Commercial Banking team. She has the pleasure of helping businesses to achieve their goals no matter how simple or complex their needs may be. Her focus is on understanding unique 
client needs and delivering financial guidance and solutions.

Veronica brings a combined 15 years of experience in client management, B2B, operational efficiency, and business banking. Throughout her career, she has served small to commercial-sized businesses, supporting their needs from start-up to scaling to exiting. Veronica was awarded the highest Pinnacle achievement award in 2022 for her achievements with Bank of America. She is dedicated to accessing the right solutions wherever they are found, using her network as a gateway to other parts of the bank.
